The irony of the CBSNews headline:

See, Gosnell is only guilty of murdering three babies, because the thousands of other babies he killed (same ages, same sizes) were killed legally.

It's sort of like when the Nazis killed the Jews. It wasn't murder, you understand, because in Germany at that time, the law said it was okay.

And if men make laws saying that it's okay to target and kill certain groups of human beings, then, well, it must be okay, right?

There are surely no other abortionists guilty of murdering any other babies day in and day out, they are only efficiently providing "reproductive health services". Aside from those three murdered babies (an anomaly!), all is well in Abortionville, USA. Nothing to see here, move along now….

  1. Even when this issue is debated using ONLY secular logic, one wonders how supposedly educated people can be BOTH pro-choice AND recognize science & human rights. In fact, this is such a harsh contradiction one can see a need for a diabolical force to help generate a moral "blind-spot".

  2. Once one group of stronger people can legally kill another group of weaker people, no one is safe. The basis can change. Right now, the weaker ones (unborn) are in the wrong place at the wrong time; next it could be the wrong religion or color. Oh wait.

  3. Color me confused, but wasn't 3rd trimester abortion illegal in PA even when done before the baby emerged from the birth canal? Did this case not even address that issue? Or is it merely a minor infraction to violate that law - like running a stop sign?

  4. Sweet Jane: Yes abortion after 24 weeks is illegal as is not proving care if the baby survives the procedure. Dr Gosnell apparently kept no records so could only be charged based on what his staff/ former patients were willing to testify about.

    1. And just think—preemies who are born at 24 weeks often go on to healthy, unremarkable childhoods. But in any case, I hear from the news that he had destroyed a lot of records but that he had instructed staff to tell "patients" that babies were not as far along as they actually were. One baby was aborted at about 30 weeks. Gosnell reportedly laughingly told his staff that this kid could have walked him out to the bus stop.

      Dear Lord, change his heart!

  5. Glad he was found guilty. Hopefully this will start some people thinking. Sometimes it takes people a really long time to think.

  6. Although I know many other babies died at Gosnell's hands, I am relieved that he was found guilty on three charges. Due to the wait on the jury, I really felt like he wasn't going to be convicted at all. I pray for his conversion.

  7. I'm praying the members of the jury will grant many, many interviews in the coming days.

  8. sweet jane, Lauren,

Gosnell was convicted on over 200 other counts, several of which were for performing abortions past the gestational age allowed by the state of Pennsylvania. I was glad to hear that.

  9. These are excellent points that you made, Leila. I'm interested to see what others might say to argue them.

  10. The discussion this has started in secular and pro-choice communities is something to be thankful for. It is causing a lot of people to truly pause and think.... and that's the beginning of grace. Thank God for the good that will come out of this (minimal) publicity.

  11. The discussion is a good thing. But unfortunately the other side thinks they can draw some kind of Line of Demarcation between acceptable abortion and unacceptable abortion. They'll pick some random spot on the gestational line and say "here and no further". But intellectually and psychologically it doesn't make sense. To the Gosnell's of the world, "24 weeks" seems random because it IS random. Why go 55 mph when I go 65 mph with impunity. What's so special about 55, 24, 12--just numbers. My prayer is that the discussion will lead us to an acknowledgement, as a country, of human life at conception. Otherwise there will continue to be Gosnell types and Susan Smith types!

  12. Found in Gosnell’s background is the “Mother’s Day Massacre”.

The event was given the name because Gosnell and his partner, Harvey Karman, bused 15 poor women from Chicago to Gosnell’s Philadelphia clinic to do the abortions on Mother’s Day in 1972.

Operation Rescue Senior Policy Advisor Cheryl Sullenger told WND in an interview that Gosnell and his partner not only did the abortions before Roe v. Wade, they were using an experimental method.

“It was called the super coil, a plastic ball with razor blades on it. They would insert the coil into the woman’s uterus to induce an abortion,” Sullenger said. “I don’t think any of the women knew they were guinea pigs, that they were being used as an experiment.”

The blades were gel-coated and laid down. The device was designed so that when the woman’s body temperature melted the gel, the blades sprang up to cut the baby, thus inducing the abortion.

“Most of the women experienced complications and needed additional medical treatment,” Sullenger said. “One woman ended up needing a radical hysterectomy.

“That’s why they call it the Mother’s Day Massacre,” Sullenger said.

  13. Another Gosnell, currently being chased down in Texas:

WARNING: Extremely disturbing photos of two murdered babies.

  14. What a peach. How can we not expect this when we give men the power kill and make a good living doing it. They are all Gosnell's just not as sloppy.
This story has made a few people confront their thinking on the issue. I had one person say" what a monster" and I said "why is that? 10 minutes ealier he's just a guy doing his job" buzz killed that conversation

  15. You all are quite right. It's so illogical, this arbitrary "line" of humanity, and the conscience has to know this on some level. I keep coming back in my mind to something a young atheist on this blog said a long time ago, a science major and quite a nice young woman, really. I showed a photo of a baby girl in a casket, killed by late-term abortion (presumably legally), and being given a proper burial by Priests for Life. I asked this young woman if that child in the casket was child deserving of love or a piece of trash. She said more than once, even as she looked right at that little dead girl, that she did not know…. because she didn't know the circumstances of why the mother aborted her! She could not know whether the girl before her eyes was trash to be thrown out, or deserving of love, until she had more information about the reason for the abortion!

I still cannot get over that one. My mind cannot comprehend that kind of thought process.

And Francis, oh my gosh, that case in Texas. I wish I could unsee those photos, but it's so important that we understand what is happening in our nation. So much evil, and most just turn away. We can't do that anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I am glad that for once I did not open the link (Francis' in this case) not to have to see those photos. The picture of the baby boy killed by Gosnell was quite enough. It is the same as watching the dead body piles in Auschwitz. The same. Scars you for life.

Regarding the arbitrariness of the "deadline" of abortions. Conceptually it is very clear. And I am 100% pro-life from the moment of conception. But I find it difficult to explain to a "pro-choicer" that there is really no difference between the baby killed at 24 weeks and the one at 2 weeks. For us Catholics there is little difference, but for a pro-abortion person, there is. Sentience. It's emotionally much less clear.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Sebastian, right. Because the pro-"choice" person is basing another's humanity not on science, but on feelings ("This embryo does not seem like a human being") or metaphysics ("What is 'personhood' anyway?"). If they stuck to science, and teaching textbooks about biology and embryology, they could not deny the humanity of the unborn.

What is also disturbing though, is that that the folks on the other side somehow see a difference between 23 weeks and 24 weeks, depending on what a man-made law says! As if something magical happens after 23 weeks and six days, to make that "thing" suddenly human and worthy of rights, by the next day. Now, of course, they know in their brains that there is no difference, really, but since the government (or human law) is their highest authority, they pretend that a 23 week baby is ontologically different from a 24 week baby. It's the height of illogical. Unreasonable.

  18. Something awesome just happened. While Leila typed her answer to me (thank you!) I was watching Fr. Barron's new video http://www.wordonfire.org/WOF-TV/Commentaries-New/Modernity-and-Morality-A-commentary-by-Fr-Barron.aspx . And what Leila said, he said, arguing from a different angle. The modern mind is about feelings, about me. It is so very hard to have a meaningful conversation with "folks on the other side", in Leila's words, because our premises are so different. Perhaps that is why the conversions from "the other side", a la Leah Libresco, are so rare. How to cross that divide? Only the Lords calls His people, but please oh Lord, call a little louder and harder!

  20. Just saw the Texas thing. Is this what guys like Fr. Kapaun and all the other vets gave their lives for? We will celebrate memorial day and what they did for us. That baby is also US! Friggin cold, unjust and un-American. We suck and if God is more Just than Merciful, we should have a comet bearing down to split this rock in two as we speak.

  21. Sorry . That is just one of the worst things I've ever seen. You ever get a sense that something is actually much worse than you realized? This is the end result of man without Truth. Even the animal world is not this self destructive.

  22. Chris, I am with you. No one with a heart can look at those murdered children and still defend the evil that is abortion.

As you said, murder those sweet babies ten minutes and a few inches earlier, and it's just a guy doing his job. And he will be called a hero, lauded by our president, our academics, our media, our entertainment industry, our cultural elites.

God is not impressed. His little ones will not go without justice, and it should make all of us tremble.

  23. Chris,

The devil destroys the mind, heart, soul and body - in that order. Which is why the wise man first and foremost guards his mind. These killers have lost theirs. As has, frighteningly, a vast segment of modern society.

For example, the Hippocratic Oath - which used to govern the conduct of medical professionals - has been abandoned by many schools and, where it is still sworn, has been amended so many times it's but a shadow/mockery of the original. One specific clause that is no longer included in ANY current version of the oath is "I will neither give a deadly drug to anybody if asked for it, nor will I make a suggestion to this effect. Similarly I will not give to a woman an abortive remedy." The changes to the oath were obviously made to facilitate euthanasia and the murder of children under the macabre guise of providing "healthcare". Did anyone hear of these vitally significant (and terrifying) changes to the medical profession? Were they ever discussed or debated in the public square? Even if the changes (and the whole plethora of life-and-death consequences arising therefrom) were to become widely known/realized today, would anybody care?

Okay, mate, gotta run. I mustn't miss gorgeous Mizz Ellen's "Best Celebrity Bloopers Ever Special" on the tube starting in a minute. I reckon it's gonna be the most ama-a-zing show ever! Hooroo.

    I couldn't agree more.

Last year, Cardinal George Pell engaged Richard Dawkins (the sadly smirking Richard Dawkins) in a televised debate about the faith. At one point Dawkins sought to belittle the Cardinal with a sarcastic charge about men in frocks "running around scaring little children with fictitious warnings about some terrible and gruesome place called hell." Surely the Cardinal was old enough to know (as all educated and enlightened folks are) that such a fanciful place of Christian dreaming doesn't actually exist?

The Cardinal took it beautifully in his stride. Almost, as it were, to himself, he mused, "Well, I'm not sure I can prove to anyone that there is a hell. But it strikes me," he said, "if there isn't a hell, then there isn't really reliable/ultimate justice for man after all. If there isn't a hell, then we must accept that Hitler, Stalin, Mao Tse Tung, Pol Pot and all those terrible mass murderers got away scot-free after all, making our very concept of justice and equity quite flaky and dubious." (If I were the Cardinal, I'd probably have added, just as snarkily as Dawkins, "the concept of justice and equity in Christian AND secular dreaming.")

There was a pregnant pause in the debate. You coulda heard a clever atheist chin drop!

If you listen carefully, you'll be able to hear the terrible din in heaven right now - of the blood of millions of ruthlessly dismembered innocents crying out for justice. The wise will repent and mend their ways before it arrives.

  25. Call me Columbo, but you Frances, must be Australian mate. Being able to so eloquently spell out the end of days and fully appreciate and acknowledge the beauty and magnificence of the Ellen show shows a true depth of charector. Thanks for totally ruining my day yesterday. But ya know, seeing that stuff really does force you to look at Christ crucified. I'm sure there is a great Sheen quote that could go here. The Cardinals answer is just so true and telling. I can imagine each one of those butchers asking Pilates question in frustration "what is truth?" and man quits asking or believes there is no such thing, cruelty becomes the next Logical stop.
I have no such burden today though. Christ is king, and his Mercy is great. And I have a secret weapon of 7 month old baby angel who can fix any anxiety. Kaput lucky and blessed and like Jesus tells his disciples" kings and wiseman only wish they could know what you have heard and learned" or something like that.

  27. Just like I said above.
Turning to the disciples, He said privately, "Blessed are the eyes which see the things you see, for I say to you, that many prophets and kings wished to see the things which you see, and did not see them, and to hear the things which you hear, and did not hear them." Luke 10 23-24
